CONVENTIONS DEVELOPED
Font
For our use of font, we tried to show our sub-genre through it but not too much as we didn't want to completely make our opening sequence sic-fi, so we found a font that we thought had both the balance of coming of age and sic-fi. Our font is bold so that its modern and easy to read with fits with our coming of age genre but the font we used also is eroded on the letters which shows to our target audience that we have a sub-genre of sci-fi / post apocalyptic. We felt that this really moved away from the typical font of a coming of age font which is more likely to be a handwritten font, but we felt like this made of film different and stand out from all the other coming of age films.
Soundtrack/ Sound Effects
A typical soundtrack/sound effect for a coming of age film is light happy music which includes lyrics. However, a typical soundtrack/sound effect for a sci-fi/ post apocalyptic film is tension building and powerful, and doesn't include lyrics. We developed this convention as we decided to chose a tension buliding soundtrack that engaged the audience and was more sic-fi/ post apocalyptic, we felt that this fitted with out footage more and gave a more gripping effect, we also used it because we wanted to build tension in particular areas of the opening sequence, this helped to keep the audience engaged in our opening.
Dialogue
We created a script that was extremely simple, we didn't want the actor to speak at all as we felt that this would ruin the effect of loneliness that we were trying to create in our post apocalyptic setting. However, we wanted some speaking at the start of the opening sequence before our footage had started to summarise what had happened overall and that the cause of out main actor being alone was that a deadly disease had wiped out all of man kind but however he'd had survived. We felt that this was important piece of speaking because without it the audience wouldn't know why he was on his own or what he was doing there.
